Wonder Bread Factory
After sitting in vacant disrepair for nearly twenty years, the Wonder Bread Factory at 641 S Street in DC's Shaw neighborhood took on new life after an extensive renovation undertaken by the Douglas Development Corporation. With its industrial character and variety of spaces, the complex was adapted for creative-flex office and retail uses. The design entailed replacing all building systems, conducting major structural repairs, reconfiguring parking areas, and constructing a new three-story addition, while preserving original details such as masonry, metal friezes and cornices. Along the south facade, the south facade was carefully rehabilitated, while the new rooftop addition was set back from the street-facing facade to preserve the original industrial character of the building.
